The Color Commons addresses the question “How to create a sense of place in a temporary city that is in a constant state of metamorphosis?” by using the most ephemeral of materials: Silk, color, and air. Simple in design but dramatic in nature, fifty-one hand-dyed banners beckon from across the playa, create a kinetic silken environment, and provide ever-changing views of the city from a dynamic interior.
Concentric circles of banners are hand-dyed in shades along the color wheel by mixing the three primaries, red, yellow, and blue. The subtly morphing colors represent the infinite changing hues of light and the way our eyes perceive it. Each banner gradates from one color to the next, growing in intensity of color and size as you approach the center of the installation. Close inspection of the silks reveal subtle patterns: the cracked surface of the playa, sastrugi waves of dust, the trash fence, and other familiar textures.
In the center of the installation is the Prism, a 14-foot-tall triangular tower. Inside the Prism is a sound installation which uses noise-reducing technology to take participants outside of the constant ambient soundtrack of Burning Man. This interior space envelops the participant in a quietude rarely experienced on playa.
Hexagonal seating modules, fitted together like the cells of a beehive, are sited around the installation and the Prism. They provide places to gather, rest, and commune with other Burners.
At night, images transitioning through the color wheel are rear-projected onto a band of acrylic panels at the top of the Prism. LED parcan lights discreetly mounted at the top of the Prism will bathe the banners in soft, clear modulating hues. More colored lights glow through translucent spacers set into the sides of the seating modules. This lighting design reinforces the theme of color metamorphosis through the dark hours.

We are Burning Man veterans with nearly 40 years of combined on-playa experience, working on such projects as Skybound, Playastan Crossroads, The Genie Bottle, Catacomb of Veils, Camp 11:11 Castle Art Car, Camp 11:11 theme camp etc…
We are a fun-loving collective that appreciates the opportunity to bring rigorous, thought provoking and colorful art experiences to the Playa. Dusty Nationals have also served in Burning Man roles including Ranger, DPW, Playa Restoration, and as supporting members to various theme camps.
Cameron Anne Mason, lead artist is a sculptor and installation artist working with fiber-based media. Her installations have been seen at Burning Man, Bellevue Arts Museum, Sound Transit, MadArt, COCA, Heaven and Earth at Carkeek park, Bellevue Storefronts and the Bellewether Sculpture Biennial.
